Heart Surgery Infections from Contaminated Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler Systems

surgery bigIf you have had open heart surgery such as a heart bypass or valve replacement, or a liver transplant, within the last two years, you must be aware that the Food and Drug Administration has determined that infections have been linked to contamination caused by the Stockert 3T heater-cooler system used in many hospitals in these types of surgeries. Researchers have discovered that these machines (manufactured by LivaNova PLC in London, England) are capable of blowing bacteria from within their system into the surgical environment. If those bacteria land on a device being implanted, or in the open surgical wound, a serious and potentially fatal infection could occur in the patient even a few months following the surgery.

These infections, known as mycobacterium chimaera infections, are generally very rare, but they can be very dangerous and even fatal.

Patients are receiving letters from their hospital, notifying them of this potential risk of infection and urging them to seek immediate care if they experience any of these common symptoms of infection even months after their surgery:

  • Fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Muscle aches
  • Vomiting

If you have received or do receive such a letter, please call our firm right away.
We are accepting new cases involving victims of this contamination.
